Tachibana-san was born in 1974, Naha, Okinawa, Japan, to an American father and a Japanese mother. She was brought up on military bases around the continental United States, where she always felt like an outsider. Unable to hold dual citizenship, and feeling as though she didn't belong anywhere, she gave up her American passport at the age of 24 and returned to Okinawa, where she has based her artistic practice.
